By the time Geely takes possession of the Iron Mark, as Volvo likes to call its badge, it will have some idea how the S60 has been received by buyers and a very good grasp of what its $US1. Tata offered similar assurances about a hands-off approach and kept its word right up to the point when the numbers weren't to its liking. Volvo, on the other hand, is operating on assurances it will be left alone to keep doing what it's doing while Geely pumps in about $1bn in operating capital. It will be offered first on the S60 and be available in the US, where the issue of brakes has become a legal minefield thanks to Toyota. Volvo is not the first brand in the Ford stable to be sold to the developing world, with Jaguar Land Rover bought by Tata Motors, part of a large Indian conglomerate, two years ago. "Geely has made it very clear that it will leave Volvo to operate as Volvo," the company's Australian managing director, Alan Desselss, says.
