Lately, I feel like it’s 1982 as I drive around town (the only thing missing: my parents’ giant, wood-paneled station wagon) — these gazing balls are popping up everywhere, even in Price Chopper where I saw them for sale in the seasonal section. While a gazing ball is better than a garbage can, I’m kind of wishing for a hail storm to breeze through the 518 and wipe them all out. My mom explained that these pedestaled balls were garden art — like a centerpiece to the rhododendrons, burning bushes and cherry trees. Planting areas, I knew, thanks to “Magic Garden” and “Mister Rogers” were supposed to be natural and vibrant and full of life — not tainted with a glass ball that could blind you if the sun caught it just right....
