Armed with grants from the U. S. Energy Department, Reno officials said the construction of two windmills, totaling 3 kilowatts in output, makes their city the first in the United States to invest in and explore urban wind. The idea, explained Jason Geddes, the city's environmental services administrator, is to map wind activity in the city in much the same way San Francisco and other cities have mapped rooftop solar.
