Officials disagree over vinyl windows
The City Council by a 5-3 vote approved allowing businessman Fielding Stanton to replace wood windows with vinyl windows on a house he owns at 202 W. Franklin St. in the Dougherty Historic District.
By taking the action, the council Dec. 14 overrode a unanimous 8-0 denial by the Historic District Review Commission, which hears applications involving houses and buildings in the city’s five historic districts and other significant landmark properties outside the districts.
Under current regulations, vinyl windows are not allowed, said Jonna Wensel, community development manager, but that could change.
“The City Council has expressed a desire to revisit the vinyl windows issue,” Wensel said.
She said it was anticipated that the council would meet with HDRC to hash out potential ordinance changes in dealing with properties in historic districts. Under existing ordinances, exterior changes cannot be made to those properties without approval from HDRC. The council, though, has authority to override HDRC.
